The Kansas City Community Bail Fund https://www.kccommunitybailfund.org

One of the newest organizations to join the Justice & Equity Coalition is the Kansas City Community Bail Fund. The Kansas City Community Bail Fund was founded in May 2019 by Lauren Worley and Chloe Cooper, two social workers working for a housing program for formerly homeless youth and families in Kansas City.

Worley and Cooper continued this fund because through their work and experiences they knew the harmful effects pretrial detention can have on nearly every aspect of one's life. Since 2019, the KC Community Bail Fund has gained much-needed attention and support to continue this work.

Please welcome Chloe and Janet to the Justice & Equity Coalition.

Please notice how a revolving bail fund would work.

The bail and pretrial detention are predominately for the poor. Those individuals with money or whose family members have money do not suffer. However, many for urban and poor communities do not have money for bail. Therefore, that individual has to go to jail until the trial. There is no incentive for pro-bono trial lawyers to rush their cases. So, individuals often sit in jail for months. This is unfair and unjust.

The National Bail Project has offices across the United States to help with bail. For more information go to: https://bailproject.org
